Mobile Modular: Delivering innovative, flexible modular space to NASA.

Challenge

Greenbelt, MD – In support of a new branch of the Hubble Space Telescope program, NASA needed extra office space at the Goddard Space Flight Center. Fast tracked within the federal government, the new project presented NASA with a short deadline – just a couple of months – to acquire new and modernized office space suitable for the team’s needs.

NASA required the demolition of a circa-1970’s modular four-floor complex already on site, followed by the design and installation of a new eight-floor building that included access via ADA-compliant ramps and decks. The interior of the new building would need to include cubicle space in a specific, unique layout for Hubble team members.

Solution

As NASA’s preeminent national space flight laboratory, Goddard Space Flight Center in Maryland today is tasked with the research, design and scientific innovation most vital to American space exploration efforts. To support a new Hubble Space Telescope effort, NASA received modern modular space to house the team’s 30 scientists and administrative personnel.

“From start to finish, Mobile Modular was able to make this project run very smoothly. The sales people were very knowledgeable and were able to meet all our requirements, even as they changed.”

Rachel Oster - Acquisition Specialist TRAX International

Both before and after the award of the building contract, Mobile Modular’s Mid-Atlantic team met numerous times at Goddard Space Flight Center to ascertain and address the specific workspace needs of NASA officials. The new plan included an eight-floor, state of the art modular building system, a structure incorporating “clear span” beams that would cross the building length and allow available work space to be reconfigured as needed in the future.

A properly planned demolition and debris clearing was followed by an efficient installation of the new building, designed per customer specification to utilize land occupied by the original modular unit. In order to accommodate the specific cubicle layout required by NASA, Mobile Modular designed the building with “clear span” beams, eliminating the need for interior load bearing walls or posts.

Rachel Oster, acquisition specialist from TRAX International (who awarded the contract to Mobile Modular on behalf of NASA) says, “From start to finish, Mobile Modular was able to make this project run very smoothly. Their sales people were very knowledgeable and were able to meet all our requirements, even as they changed. The demolition and installation processes were completed within a very aggressive schedule, and the final product is a beautiful modular office space, built exactly to our specifications.”

Mobile Modular: Delivering the United States Army a robust yet cost effective modular medical facility.

Challenge

Augusta, GA – The United States Army is currently renovating the Eisenhower Army Medical Center at Fort Gordon in Augusta, Georgia. Not long after the Task Order was awarded to construction firms Syska Hennessy and Larry Pittman & Associates, revisions of the center’s 12th floor spurred the need to expedite the scheduled completion of select finished medical facilities. Mobile Modular was contracted by Pittman to provide modular office space for center staff.

The U.S. Army requested that their new Mobile Modular building be usable as fully functional medical facilities, as well as efficient general office building space. Their specification included twenty (20) offices and a fully equipped gym.

“Mobile Modular was able to deliver the product on-time and under budget. From the operations manager to the sales specialist they have been a pleasure to work with. Their response time to every problem has been outstanding.”

Timmy Pittman - CEO of Larry Pittman & Associates

The 12th floor of Fort Gordon’s Eisenhower Army Medical Center is home to the hospital’s brain trauma group, tasked with the treatment and rehabilitation of soldiers returning with brain injuries from service in Afghanistan and Iraq. The space housed approximately twenty (20) doctors and therapists, twenty (20) nurses and ten (10) administrative personnel. The staff needed to be temporarily moved to a suitable modular workspace while the center’s 12th floor was renovated.

Solution

Mobile Modular’s Mid-Atlantic team worked closely with Larry Pittman & Associates to create a building covering 9,000 square feet to be used as medical facilities and office space during the renovation.

Early incorporation of this flexible, modular building design enabled Mobile Modular to save a tremendous amount of resources for the U.S. Army during a demanding renovation project. By being available and responsive to the customer at all times, Mobile Modular’s team was able to complete the new energy efficient building while exceeding the expectations of even the U.S. Army.

Timmy Pittman, CEO of Larry Pittman & Associates, states “Mobile Modular was able to provide a top notch product for the men and woman who serve their country, and was able to do it on time and under budget. From the operations manager to the sale specialists, they have been a pleasure to work with. Their response time to every issue has been outstanding.”

Mobile Modular delivers a temporary campus during the renovation and modernization of Eastern High School.

Challenge

Washington, D.C. – The Mayor of Washington, D.C. developed an ambitious plan to modernize the city’s schools. The Office of Public Education Facilities Modernization (OPEFM) is responsible for planning and implementation of the new program. One of the high profile projects for the 2009-2010 school year was the renovation and modernization of historic Eastern High School, a 1930’s era building located just blocks from the United States Capitol. A major challenge was where and how to accommodate students and teachers during the renovation. Mobile Modular was called for a fast-turnaround temporary leased modular space solution.

OPEFM outlined several needs for the temporary campus:

  • Keeping the students under a single roof, maintaining a campus feel
  • Providing a safe and secure learning environment
  • Efficient use of limited land space
  • Critical seven (7) week turn-around to get ready for the 2009-2010 school year
Solution

Mobile Modular, a leading modular space provider, collaborated with project architects and a general contractor to address OPEFM’s needs and timeline. First, Mobile Modular was tasked with designing a solution that utilized the limited land available in an inner-city setting. Second, the new campus needed to be secure, safe and modern to create a successful learning environment. A campus layout and feel was important. This allowed all students to remain at Eastern High School and prevented sending students to adjacent campuses for the 2009-2010 school year.

Mobile Modular designed and proposed a creative combination of modular buildings that could be strategically placed adjacent to the existing school building in an open field and on under utilized tennis courts. To keep as many students under one roof as possible, Mobile Modular introduced the CampusMaker ModPod®; a state-of-the-art, eco-friendly modular classroom complex offering unparalleled flexibility and configurability.

Each CampusMaker ModPod® complex included eight (8) 790 sq. ft. classrooms, each equipped with electrical and mechanical controls, an 8' interior corridor and restroom facilities. OPEFM required three (3) CampusMaker ModPod® complexes, resulting in twenty-four (24) classrooms that can comfortably hold up to 840 students. Further space requirements called for an additional six (6) CampusMaker Hybrid® classrooms. This modern relocatable building style allows for side-by-side, low to the ground placement substantially reducing costly ramps and decking.

“Mobile Modular rose to the occasion to make the [Eastern High School] project a success for the city of Washington, D.C. and OPEFM.”

Pamela Murray Johnson, Project Manager
Turner Construction Company

Approximately 8,000 sq.ft. of additional administrative and multi-use buildings were installed. These specially designed modular buildings comprised six (6) 24' x 56' office buildings. The entire modular campus project including over 37,000 of temporary leased space and was completed in less than seven (7) weeks. Mobile Modular was able to design and install a safe and secure learning environment for Eastern High School students, teachers and staff, keeping the entire school population together during the 2009-2010 school year.

Stonebrae Country Club

Mobile Modular delivers an attractive, amenity-rich modular building solution for Stonebrae Country Club’s new golf course clubhouse.

Challenge

Hayward, CA – Comfortably nestled 1,500 feet above the East Bay, Stonebrae Country Club offers an internationally recognized 7,200 yard golf course alongside an upscale private club. After construction plans for a new permanent clubhouse ran afoul of the 2008 housing crash and a hard economic climate, Stonebrae began searching for a less expensive expansion plan – one that would offer the construction quality and polished amenities that their members expected, with the expandability and manageability that permanent construction couldn’t offer.

Solution

When Mobile Modular was first consulted on this project in 2008, Stonebrae’s needs were clear and direct. They needed a temporary clubhouse that would include a restaurant with a full commercial kitchen and bar, administrative offices, lounge, workout room, banquet room and pro shop. Catering to a very wealthy clientele and surrounded by a community of million dollar homes, Stonebrae needed an attractive modular solution that did not look like a temporary building or traditional portable.

“Regardless of the crunch of our crucial schedule, Mobile Modular delivered and finished all 4 complex buildings in time. And more importantly, you made it look effortless.”

John Sabine, Sr., VP - Construction Stonebrae LP

Built from our standard modular office units, this successful installation has since grown into a full-featured 10,944 square foot recreational complex. Large custom windows offer a stunning view of the San Mateo Bridge and nearby Mount Tamalpais and Mount Diablo. The elegantly designed cherry wood custom bar area installed by Mobile Modular, gives club members a casual respite from an afternoon on the greens.

Today, Stonebrae Country Club is so satisfied with their new modular complex that plans for permanent construction have been postponed indefinitely. The flexibility of their Mobile Modular building allows them a cost-effective path to expand or reconfigure their clubhouse layout as their needs change. This flexibility, combined with the dedicated service and support of Mobile Modular’s team of relocatable building specialists, has empowered Stonebrae Country Club to further enhance their members’ experience – a reliable and smart solution for upscale and exclusive expectations.

Patti's PreSchool

An under-utilized corner of a popular shopping mall lays foundation for a colorful, fresh preschool setting.

Challenge

Huntington Beach, CA – Patti Young had a vision. Her dream of providing a high-quality, nurturing environment for children required a unique space that encouraged her students to grow and learn. Proving to be a great location for neighborhood children, an unused corner of a shopping center, however, provided a challenge to site layout and building orientation. Patti was committed to designing a space that blended with the neighborhood aesthetic and offered easy access, yet needed to deliver an open, spacious environment that allowed students and teachers to thrive.

Solution

Patti chose local modular building vendor, Mobile Modular, to help create a custom, affordable solution. Working closely with the Mobile Modular design team to select the most flexible standard buildings, Patti was presented with a staggered configuration that also doubled as an urban infill solution. Two (2) 60' x 60' modular units were situated with a 12' offset to add architectural interest and conform with site conditions. Design elements from the shopping center were incorporated to provide harmony with existing structures and included a tower, trellises and a covered entryway. Geometric shapes simulate building blocks for added appeal. The complimentary color scheme selected for the stucco exterior portrays a fresh and playful look in keeping with the building’s use and setting. The final structure housed six (6) self- contained classrooms. The elaborate facade presents a permanent appearance in a high-end neighborhood.

The final design was approved in a very restrictive code environment. In all, six (6) classrooms were readied for occupancy with individual work areas, sinks, and restroom facilities - even a kitchen for serving meals. Counter and cabinet heights were adjusted to be child-friendly. The majority of the fire sprinkler system and fire alarm infrastructure was installed prior to installation in order to facilitate quicker installation and occupancy on site. To further support administrative areas, a 100# floor load was added. A double top plate and rim joist provided blocking for site built trellis support. Other amenities included an alarm system with security, fire, water, smoke, heat, and PIV/OS&Y tamper sensors.

Success

With Mobile Modular’s technical innovation, design and state-of-the-art modular engineering, Patti was able to welcome students to a brand new 7,200 sq. ft. childcare facility. Students, parents and teachers enjoyed the added space, use of natural lighting and bright, fun color schemes. Patti can continue to deliver on her promise of a warm, loving environment where children thrive.

Mobile Modular: Equipping the United States Navy with dependable modular space.

Challenge

Quantico, VA - At the Quantico Marine Base in Virginia, the United States Navy is currently engaged in a major $9.9 million renovation of Building 2006, an office building that currently houses administration for the Headquarters and Services Battalion of the U.S. Marine Corps. The Navy anticipated the need to relocate Building 2006 staff to modular office space for a year while Forrester Construction, the general contractor, completed the renovation. In their specification, the Navy required modular buildings and portable restrooms featuring ADA-accessible ramps and decking to be built to demanding military-grade standards for design and construction.

Solution

Working closely with the general contractor to meet the exacting U.S. Navy building requirements, the Mobile Modular Mid-Atlantic team designed and fabricated modular office space suitable for Building 2006 administrative staff during the renovation. Challenges included limited available space, inclined terrain for construction and the need to efficiently house 300 U.S. Marines while the three story, 1940-era building renovations were completed.

“The [Mobile Modular] HVAC systems have proven to be some of the most reliable and effective aboard the base, which is crucial during the summer months in Quantico.”

Captain Djerf of the United States Marine Corp

To minimize disruption to Marine Corps staff, the Mobile Modular team opted to use a combination of different modular buildings deployed in three strategic locations surrounding the Building 2006 renovation site. The new Marine Corps modular buildings included twenty-one (21) 24’ x 56’ general modular office buildings and two (2) 12’ x 56’ restroom buildings. Each office and restroom building was fitted with reusable galvanized aluminum decking and ramping to meet ADA compliance requirements.

Captain Djerf of the United States Marine Corps offered, “When problems arise, Forrester and Mobile Modular have been quite responsive in correcting them. The HVAC systems have proven to be some of the most reliable and effective aboard the base, which is crucial during the summer months in Quantico. Additionally, the lavatory trailers are spacious and easy to keep clean. All told, these structures are serving their purpose quite well.”

The entire building project, covering nearly 33,000 square feet, was successfully completed in just seven weeks despite facing one of the worst winters in ten years. Despite tough challenges from Mother Nature, Mobile Modular successfully completed the Building 2006 project to the satisfaction of Forrester Construction, the U.S. Navy and the U.S. Marine Corps in record time.
